National Festival or National Holiday?

I woke up today, only to cross one more date in the way of my birthday and the date 2nd October was coloured with red colour. Something special? I asked myself when I finally remembered that it's Gandhi Jayanti, our national festival which is more often referred to as a national holiday.

I don't know about others. But, according to me, holidays have lost their meaning and importance in this pandemic. Independence Day, Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti were nothing more than a mere holiday for many till last year but the whole meaning has transformed, now.

Though, I don't used to get a holiday for these days as school functions are held but I have had a strange urge for these days from childhood. I always used to look forward to these days. And, I used to be the one, roaming around the whole house shouting and wishing everyone. While, this pandemic has changed the whole meaning for these holidays, now.

Grandma tells me, of his stories. Though she, herself hadn't met him ever but she went on to transfer the stories told by her mother to me. One of which was of Amma, telling her Mohan to stay away from the sweeper boy but he, on the other hand had made him his best friend. A friend he loved and lied upon, truthfully. I was moved. Even now, I see children, younger than me on roads, sweeping away the dust of the muddy shoes of VIPs.
