Why did our Vedic seers depict God as a figure smeared in ash and dancing in ecstasy, and call Him Mahadeva?

The world of objects and beings we perceive around us, appears to be infinite and myriad in it's variety of names and forms. Though superficially, everything appears to be unique and distinct from each other, once they are consumed by fire, they all turn into ash and become indistinguishable from each other. The ash smeared figure of Shiva, symbolizes that everything around us, including ourselves, is just ash, enlivened by a singular life force i.e God ( the dancing Shiva depicts the underlying life force that creates movement of the ash that is the world.)
