‘One nation, one poll’ will require 18 amendments to Constitution

Noting that “the government must develop a legally tenable mechanism in order to restore the cycle of simultaneous elections,” the report of the high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind — approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday — has recommended 18 amendments to various provisions of the Constitution and different laws.
The panel recommended certain “necessary amendments” to the Constitution and other relevant laws to make it possible to hold three-tier simultaneous polls across India. It suggested adding a new provision — Article 82A — to the Constitution which would override Article 83 (Duration of Houses of Parliament) and Article 172 (Duration of State Legislatures) in order to synchronise elections. What’s important is that “For this Amendment, ratification by the States is not required,” the report stated. It has also suggested adding Article 324A to the Constitution for enabling simultaneous elections in panchayats and municipalities with the general elections of the House of the People and the State Legislative Assemblies.

Russia Orders More Evacuations in Kursk Region Amid Ongoing Ukrainian Incursion

Authorities in southwestern Russia’s Kursk region on Monday ordered the mandatory evacuation of two more districts along the border with Ukraine, as Kyiv’s forces remain in control of a large swath of Russian territory despite Moscow’s counteroffensive efforts.
“The regional crisis center has decided to mandate the evacuation of towns in the Rylsky and Khomutovsky districts, located within a 15-kilometer [9-mile] zone near the Ukrainian border,” Kursk region Governor Alexei Smirnov said.
Those districts encompass dozens of villages and towns with a combined population of less than 40,000 people.
According to Radio Svoboda, the Russian-language service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the town of Rylsk, with 15,000 residents, is not currently subject to the evacuation orders.

Police release striking Samsung workers detained for planning protest march

The Samsung protests have cast a shadow on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plan of courting foreign investors to "Make in India" and tripling electronics production to $500 billion in six year

Indian police late on Monday released most of the 104 striking workers at a Samsung Electronics plant who were detained for planning a protest march without permission, with the dispute disrupting output at the factory for the past week.

The detention marked an escalation of a strike by workers at the Samsung home appliance plant near Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu. Workers who want higher wages have since Sept. 9 stopped work at the plant that contributes roughly a third of Samsung's annual India revenue of $12 billion.

Adani wins bid to supply 6,600 MW of electricity at Rs 4.08/unit tariff

Supplies are to start in 48 months from the date of award of the letter of intent

Adani group has won a bid to supply 6,600 MW of bundled renewable and thermal power to Maharashtra for the long term after its quote of Rs 4.08 per unit beat the likes of JSW Energy and Torrent Power, sources said.
Its bid for the bundled renewable and thermal energy supply for 25 years was almost a rupee lower than the cost at which Maharashtra currently procures electricity and will help meet future electricity requirements of the state, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said.
Supplies are to start in 48 months from the date of award of the letter of intent.
As per the bid conditions, Adani Power will supply solar power at a fixed cost of Rs 2.70 per unit throughout the entire supply period, while that from coal will be indexed to coal prices.
Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL), in March, floated a unique tender for sourcing 5,000 MW of electricity generated from sunlight and 1,600 MW of power generated from coal.
