White "Krishna and Rukmini" King Bhishmaka had only one daughter, Princess Rukmini. Rukmini was hopelessly in love with Krishna, a cowherd residing in Gokul. Her brother Rukmi hated Krishna. Among Rukmi's friends were Jarasandha, the Emperor of Magadha and Sisupala, the King of Chedi. These two were good friends with king Kansa too, the ruler of Mathura. King Kansa was Krishna's cruel uncle. Kansa was responsible for Krishna being forced to live as a cowherd at Gokul, in spite of being a prince. Why did an uncle do that to his nephew? Kansa's stars foretold a terrible prophecy. It said Kansa would die at the hands of his nephew! This brought about an edict from Kansa that all children born to his sister would be killed. By trick, Krishna was saved and smuggled out safely. Now all grown and big, it was just a matter of time before Krishna made his move! Krishna had no choice! His uncle Kansa was proving to be a nasty ruler and the people were praying for someone to save them! Circumstances led to a battle between the uncle and the nephew and Kansa was killed by Krishna. White "Krishna and Rukmini -3" When Krishna read the letter, he smiled and immediately fell in love 💖 with this brave damsel. Krishna gave a verbal reply, "Tell Rukmini to come to the temple before her marriage rites. There I will be waiting for her. No force on earth can stop me, now that I know she loves me so much!" Rukmini was thrilled when she received the reply. As she had suspected, she was coerced into agreeing to her brother's plans. Secretly, Rukmini knew Krishna would save her. So, she went along with things, not raising any suspicions. The groom's entourage had arrived. Splendour and pomp marked the occasion. Crowds Thronged to witness the wedding. The bride's carriage stopped at the temple and Rukmini eagerly dismounted. Soon, the prayers were finished at the temple but Krishna still had not shown up. Dismayed and sad, Rukmini returned to sit in the carriage. "Come, let's go my lovely," someone laughed into her ear as a firm hand curved around her waist and she was lifted on to a chariot. "Krishna! said Rukmini excitedly. Krishna laughed at her reaction. "Away, we go! He chuckled, whipping his horses to move fast. Rukmini realising what had happened, roared, "Stop them!" White "Krishna and Rukmini -4" A chase ensued. Krishna with Rukmini in tow, flew like the winds. Meanwhile at Dwarka, Krishna's brother Balram was told of Krishna's plan of elopement with Rukmini. He decided to meet Krishna with an army. "Things can turn ugly and he might need my help, Balaram pondered. On the other side, Jarasandha reacted by launching an attack. Krishna sailed towards the gates of Dwarka. There Balaram immediately began to push Jarasandha's army away! Rukmini, however, sped through the gates, closely following Krishna. He even shot an arrow at them which bounced off Krishna's armour! Krishna released his arrows in reply which shattered the wheels of Rukmini's chariot and it toppled. Rukmini sprang out and lunged towards Krishna who had also stopped. Krishna parried his attack so swiftly that Rukmi stumbled and fell at Krishna's feet. Krishna was about to behead him but Rukmini stopped him. She begged him to spare her brother's life! Krishna agreed. Krishna lifted his Rukmini and took her into Dwarka. "He has reinstalled king Ugrasen! Krishna rid us of a cruel king 👑. Krishna now stays in Dwarka! Krishna is doing this! Krishna is doing that!" Smatters of information were being told and retold! In-spite of all these celebrations, Jarasandha obviously failed. Krishna was lionized even more by the populace. Fatigued of constant failure, Jarasandha decided to give up the attacks and move away! Yet, tension prevailed. "Father," said Rukmi to the king, "I have decided that Rukmini should marry Sisupala, the king of Chedi." Unknown to Rukmi, Rukmini overheard this conversation! She was shocked that her brother did not want to follow the normal procedure of a swayamvara! At a swayamvara, Rukmini would have the right to choose her own husband! Knowing she would be forced to agree to these preposterous suggestions, Rukmini decided to write to Krishna and ask him for help. In a beautifully drafted letter, she opened her heart as well as her daunting situation to Krishna. This letter was smuggled out by a Brahmin messenger!
