Recap... Zoi, a chick albatross bird, and her fellow chicks have found themselves stranded on Layson Island, separated from their parents. Their only option for survival is to fly into the ocean. The tiger sharks are well aware of the inability of the albatross chicks to carry on with a maiden straight flight, as they tend to rest on the waters before their next flight. Sharks exploit this weak point of chicks and pounce on them for a quick meal. Zoi also faced the same challenges, and his initial attempt at flight proved unsuccessful. He had to land in the water, which caught a shark's attention. Zoi (Part 11) The camera captures a tiger shark swimming beneath the surface, providing a clear image of Zoi on top. The shark below has already assessed the distance and enhanced its pace to attack Zoi. Meanwhile, on the surface, Zoi looked around and could not see any sharks nearby. It quacks and tries to fly. But the lack of wind and the weight of the water on his body made it impossible. The shark gets closer to Zoi from behind. With its wide jaw, the shark attacks Zoi, but he lifts himself up just in time. It was indeed a lucky escape, but to land again in the waters a few meters away. The shark, too, has not given up. Within seconds, it launched another attack from the side. This time, instead of flying, Zoi makes the seawater its runway. Flapping its wings, it runs over the water's surface to get the required acceleration for takeoff. Within seconds, the camera shows Zoi running fast with wide wings. It then takes off into the skies. Finally, he is off into the open skies, into the horizon, to breathe in the beauty of life. Hopefully, he will meet his parents. He may not touch land again for five years, as he would travel thousands of kilometres across the ocean searching for food. Now, I see Zoi flying deep into the horizon. I breathe a sigh of relief! I saw Zoi look back and thought it said, "Goodbye and thanks for being with me!" With tears, I said, "Goodbye, dear Zoi; I wish you well!" -Krishnan Please note below to view this documentary. Recap... For quite a while, Zoi, an albatross chick bird, along with other albatross chicks, have been stranded on Layson Island without their parents, and now it's time for them to fly into the open ocean to live their lives. However, they must overcome the risk of being forced to land in the water (since this is their first flight) and become a meal for the ravenous tiger sharks. In fact, the merciless killing has already begun, and Zoi has been observing since he, too, has to face the same challenge, failing which he would end up as a feast to one of the sharks! Zoi (Part 10) Zoi prepares for the takeoff and takes a few back-forth steps to warm up. If he reaches the open ocean, he will be a free bird without touching the land again for five years. But he has to overcome his first landing in the seawater, where the tiger sharks are waiting impatiently. He knows this is not a child's game, even though he is a child now. There is no second chance or room for error as he watches the sharks kill other young albatrosses. He looks around before waiting for the right gust of wind to lift him up. Finally, it's time to fly; he flutters his wing wide open. Leaving Laysan Island on his maiden voyage would be Zoi's most dangerous journey. As the right gust of wind arrives, he begins his runway, spreading his wings. Now, for the first time in his life, he is airborne. Flying over the waves, he tries to cover up the shark-infested areas, but fate has other plans. The breeze suddenly drops, and Zoi splashes back into the water. The camera captures a tiger shark swimming beneath the surface, providing a clear image of Zoi on top. The shark below has already assessed the distance and enhanced its pace to attack Zoi. Recap... Zoi, an albatross chick bird, and other albatross chicks are left alone on Layson Island by their parents. Their only hope for survival is to fly into the ocean. But they know the risk they must take—a chance of getting eaten by the tiger sharks since their first flight will never be long. They tend to land on water immediately after taking off. Zoi gazes helplessly at the merciless slaughter of his companions by the sharks. Zoi (Part 9) The sharks continue to attack and devour as many young Albatrosses as possible to have a satisfying feast. That's the only reason these tiger sharks swam thousands of kilometres and reached here. They are well aware of the yearly Albatross breeding season on Layson Island and, most importantly, the time of their maiden takeoff, when these young chicks are forced to land in the waters. These tiger sharks make the best use of it. A few hours before or after would have made their travel a waste. But they consistently arrive at Layson Island right on time year after year. One can only be amazed by the incredible intuitive power of animals that nature has bestowed on them. At the same time, one can't help but feel sorry for all the innocent victims of these predators. Not to mention my feelings for the young ones who end their lives even before they begin to feel the beauty of life. As the documentary progresses, my curiosity snowballs to know what destiny has written for Zoi, who I believe is scared to death, watching the massacre in broad daylight. He keeps chirping as his eyes are shown in close-up, which reflects the uncertainty ahead in his life, an imminent danger that he must overcome at any cost to breathe the beautiful life waiting for him. This is the only time, and all the chicks have to move on now, or they will die of hunger on this island, as no parent will return to feed them. The wind will also leave, not to return soon. Indeed, it's a do-or-die situation, and these attacks are not encouraging. Nothing motivates them other than life itself; hence, there's no looking back. Recap... Zoi, an albatross chick bird, along with other albatross chicks, are left alone on Layson Island by their parents and now face the most challenging phase of their lives if they have to survive—their maiden flight into the ocean. Unaware of tiger sharks waiting below for a feast, a black-footed albatross lifts off into the sea, only to splash land in the waters, waiting for the wind to propel its take-off. Zoi (Part 8) All the other young ones on the beach, including Zoi, look at him sitting on the water. Others get motivated, and one by one, they follow suit and are airborne for their maiden flight. Zoi also tries and unsuccessfully lands back at the beach. The first young Albatross is still gearing for its next takeoff and waits for the wind to provide the necessary lift. However, the tiger shark lurking behind appears uninterested in waiting and pounces on the young one, which tries desperately to escape the shark's sharp jaws by frantically flapping its wings and quacking out at the top of its voice as if calling out for its parents, who are thousands of kilometres away over the Pacific Ocean, unaware that its young one is struggling between life and death with little chance of survival. Zoi stares at the attack and helplessly watches the young Albatross completely being sucked into the jaw of the tiger shark! Zoi quacks and walks a couple of steps here and there. Other young ones, too, quack and look confused. They all get rooted to their spots as they watch the tiger sharks mercilessly kill their companions one by one. However, very few young ones successfully pull themselves out of the dreadful jaws of the sharks before flying far above the ocean to live just like their parents. But yes, to get here, all these young ones must overcome the dangerous barriers of tiger sharks! Recap... Zoi, an albatross chick bird, and other albatross chicks are left alone on Layson Island by their parents and now face the most challenging phase of their lives if they have to survive—their maiden flight into the ocean. But it comes with a price, since they tend to rest in the seawater immediately after takeoff before flying again, unaware of the danger lurking below—the tiger sharks! Zoi (Part 7) Zoi has not eaten since he was abandoned by his parents two weeks ago, and to find food, he must leave the islands as soon as possible. He often tries to flutter his wings to take off but cannot create the thrust needed. These large seabirds need a lot of lift, which could come in the form of wind at any moment. Now it's the month of July, and during this time, the high ocean temperatures generate tropical storms at sea, bringing wind to Laysan, and that's a ticket out of Layson Island for all young stranded Albatross, including Zoi. All the young Albatross slowly feel the breeze, which pulls them close to the waves to gear up for the maiden takeoff. The breeze builds until there is enough momentum to lift these young ones. Some young chicks try to lift themselves up but land on the beach again. But one young black-footed Albatross finally lifts off into the sea. Zoi looks on. The best part is that the black-footed Albatross successfully used the wind for its takeoff. The worst part is that any chick's first flight is never long, and it lands on the water—the water with danger lurking beneath, the tiger sharks! Unaware of the peril, the young Albatross rests on the water and waits for the next gust of wind to propel its takeoff. Recap... Zoi, the albatross chick, and other chicks have been left alone by their parents on Layson Island since it's time for them to fly. They don't have any other alternative. If Zoi had to live his life, he would have no other choice but to fly into the ocean. But it's a world of survival, and the waters, which looked calm so far, aren't any more. Zoi ( Part 6) Summer in North Artic now faces the sun, baked in daylight, melting the ice-covered ocean. To survive in this transitioning world, life must move with it. The temperature in the North Pacific reaches its peak, and the predators in the ocean sense this change to set a new course. A tiger shark is on a 1000-kilometer journey across the Pacific. Guided by the Earth's magnetic field, she swims straight towards her target, Laysan Island, north of Hawaii. As she gets close to Laysan Island, we know she is not alone. Numerous tiger sharks have joined her. This species makes some of the longest journeys of all sharks and hunts a wider variety of animals, including birds! Now, in the Layson Islands, Zoi and other young ones are waiting for the wind to give them the lift for their maiden takeoff. These Albatross birds initially take off when the wind speed is high, and as the wind ceases, they tend to rest in the seawater before they can take off again. Recap.... Zoi, the albatross bird chick, along with other chicks, has been waiting for weeks on Layson Island for its parents to arrive with some food. At last, his father came and fed him, and his happiness knew no bounds. His father did fondle him but soon left him again alone before flying out to a life of travelling the Pacific Ocean, mostly never to return. Zoi (Part 5) Now, if Zoi has to live his life, he is left with no option but to fly. His parents wouldn't revisit him to feed or fondle him; the ocean was his only hope. But, like all Albatross young ones, he will have to wait for a strong wind to come, giving him the required push for his maiden flight. In a few weeks, the wind will arrive, and Zoi and others will debut as one of the greatest ocean travellers. But even if the right wind comes, it may bring its own dangers. Nothing is easy. Life has already pushed Zoi and his fellow chicks to a corner, with no other way out except one, and to exit that way, he has to put his life at risk. All the parent Albatross arrive on Laysan Island to breed. Their duties end once the young ones are able to fly and live their own lives. They then leave their young ones on the Island. Until this day, the ocean in front of these young ones looked calm and friendly without any threat, but not anymore. ©Krishnan #zoi #Birds #survival #Ocean #Life #Netflix #Documentary #ALBATROSS IMAGE SOURCE: NETFLIX DOCUMENTARY To be continued...

Zoi ( Part 4 ) Zoi, the albatross bird chick, has been waiting on Laysan Island for weeks for its parents to arrive with some food. Other chicks, whose parents had arrived, were fortunate enough to receive food. But patiently, Zoi waits for his parents. Zoi is seen waiting on the Laysan beach, braving the weather for another three weeks, and finally, quacking in excitement, looking at the horizon. One of its parents appears from the horizon and, within minutes, lands on the Island close to Zoi. It seems like Zoi's father has arrived. Having spent their lives so long apart, they must renew their bond before feeding. The father albatross then begins to feed our starving Zoi. Its paradise found for Zoi. But the saddest part is far from over; it is said that this could be the last meal Zoi has ever been fed, and it almost certainly contains plastic. Zoi begins to chirp and quack in happiness, wanting to have food and meet his dear father after a long time. They look at each other, and the father fondles Zoi for some time. But this beautiful moment is short-lived for Zoi. The father quacks for some time, slowly turns away from Zoi, and begins to walk in the opposite direction towards the waters before flying out to a life of travelling the Pacific Ocean, mostly never returning. Zoi looks at his dear father, disappearing into the horizon. His sad feelings are heard as a couple of quacks as he tries to bear this separation. If only he had known that meeting his parents again might not be on the cards of his destiny. Zoi is left alone to its fate, like all other lonely Albatross chicks on Layson Island, who have to make a quick decision to proceed with their maiden flight to overcome the uncertainty ahead. The plastic has indeed reached Zoi's stomach, and he, too, begins to choke! He could throw up all the hard-to-digest parts like squid, beaks, and bones, but ejecting plastic was more challenging. Luckily, he eventually managed to do so. ©Krishnan #zoi #survival #Ocean #ALBATROSS #Life #Netflix #Documentary #Birds

ZOI ( Part 3) Returning to Zoi's neighbour, the black-footed Albatross, the chick's hunger is now satisfied, but what looked like a lifeline could have been a death sentence, as the illustration below reveals:- Across the island, albatross chicks are dying. My heart sank when the documentary showed the scattered plastic waste over the beach. Laysan is about 1600 km from the Hawaiian Islands and quite far from its home country, the United States. How is it possible that such a lot of trash is spread out on this island? Imagine if these plastic wastes could reach the Earth's remotest speck of land; then what would be the plastic content lying in the ocean? Undoubtedly, these plastics lying all over are carried by ocean currents, which are thrown into the rivers, beaches, seas, and oceans by the most educated, cultured, well-mannered, and positive-thinking human beings. Yes, it's us! These Albatross parents mistake minute floating plastic particles for food and bring it to their young ones, which would, in turn, kill the chicks. The camera shows one such chick choking and then lying motionless on the ground. It's dead. Several chicks are killed due to plastic getting mixed with their food. The parents of these chicks are helpless and can do nothing other than watch them give up their lives. Zoi, too, looks helplessly at the dying chick and quacks. The documentary says that Layson Albatross birds are in the greatest danger, consuming more plastic than any other seabird. And things are only getting worse each year. To be continued... ©Krishnan #seaside #ALBATROSS #zoi #survival #Nature #island #Ocean

ZOI ( Part 2) Every bird appearing on the horizon brings hope to these chicks. Zoi continues to gaze into the ocean, braving the rain, wind, and heat. He seems to be optimistic, which keeps his hope alive. After a couple of days, a parent Albatross appears on the horizon, and Zoi quacks in anticipation. Indeed, the Albatross is carrying food. As the bird reaches Laysan Island, it turns out to be a black-footed albatross, parent to another chick. A gloomy Zoi stares at the lucky chick, who will be fed soon. The parent Albatross approaches its chick and opens its mouth to feed it. Starving, Zoi couldn't resist its hunger and tried its luck approaching the parent of the lucky chick. But clearly, for the mother, its family comes first. It pokes Zoi very hard, forcing Zoi to the ground, and Zoi quacks helplessly in pain. Incapable of doing anything, Zoi keeps staring at the mother feeding her young one. It slowly gets up, turns to the horizon, and regains its old position, waiting to see its parents flying in. Zoi's feather began to flutter in the winds, forcing it to close its eyes. But still, it keeps its eyes open, gazing far into the endless ocean. Zoi did not want to miss the sight of its parents appearing on the horizon. To be continued.... ©Krishnan #Birds #ALBATROSS #Life #survival #zoi #Ocean #Nature
