Recap... Zoi, a chick albatross bird, and her fellow chicks have found themselves stranded on Layson Island, separated from their parents. Their only option for survival is to fly into the ocean. The tiger sharks are well aware of the inability of the albatross chicks to carry on with a maiden straight flight, as they tend to rest on the waters before their next flight. Sharks exploit this weak point of chicks and pounce on them for a quick meal. Zoi also faced the same challenges, and his initial attempt at flight proved unsuccessful. He had to land in the water, which caught a shark's attention. Zoi (Part 11) The camera captures a tiger shark swimming beneath the surface, providing a clear image of Zoi on top. The shark below has already assessed the distance and enhanced its pace to attack Zoi. Meanwhile, on the surface, Zoi looked around and could not see any sharks nearby. It quacks and tries to fly. But the lack of wind and the weight of the water on his body made it impossible. The shark gets closer to Zoi from behind. With its wide jaw, the shark attacks Zoi, but he lifts himself up just in time. It was indeed a lucky escape, but to land again in the waters a few meters away. The shark, too, has not given up. Within seconds, it launched another attack from the side. This time, instead of flying, Zoi makes the seawater its runway. Flapping its wings, it runs over the water's surface to get the required acceleration for takeoff. Within seconds, the camera shows Zoi running fast with wide wings. It then takes off into the skies. Finally, he is off into the open skies, into the horizon, to breathe in the beauty of life. Hopefully, he will meet his parents. He may not touch land again for five years, as he would travel thousands of kilometres across the ocean searching for food. Now, I see Zoi flying deep into the horizon. I breathe a sigh of relief! But the saddest part is far from over; it is said that this could be the last meal Zoi has ever been fed, and it almost certainly contains plastic. Zoi begins to chirp and quack in happiness, wanting to have food and meet his dear father after a long time. They look at each other, and the father fondles Zoi for some time. But this beautiful moment is short-lived for Zoi. The father quacks for some time, slowly turns away from Zoi, and begins to walk in the opposite direction towards the waters before flying out to a life of travelling the Pacific Ocean, mostly never returning. I recently watched a documentary about one of nature's survival stories. I was impressed by the concept, narration and facts, not to mention the incredible videography. This sparked my desire to write about this documentary. After writing it, I decided to share it. These bizarre but true ways of nature will never cease to amaze those who long to know more about the animal kingdom and are fascinated by nature and its uniqueness. At the end of this article, I have mentioned the details of the documentary. I named this article "ZOI," which means life in Greek. ZOI ( PART 1) A remote speck of land lies 1600 km northwest of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. An island called Laysan. Laysan is home to one of the world's largest seabirds, 'The Layson Albatross'. The Laysan Albatross can glide over the open ocean for hours without a single flap of its long, narrow wings, cruising hundreds of miles daily on an impressive six-foot span. These birds are long-distance travellers, flying millions of kilometres in their 60-year lives. This albatross species is named for the Laysan breeding colony in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. It is one of the most common seabirds in this remote area of the world, and pairs mate for life. It forages while floating on the ocean's surface, feeding mainly on small squid, fish, and crustaceans. A six-week-old white albatross stands alone, along with other chicks, spread across the vast sandy beach. Clinging to its dear life, the albatross looks far into the horizon. This documentary mainly focuses on this particular young white Albatross. I named it ZOI (the Greek word for life). This documentary is all about survival right from birth. Zoi looks around and quacks. Presently, it's not yet ready to fly. Its eyes wander around, looking for a ray of hope, like all other young chicks looking far into the horizon. All the young chicks, including Zoi, eagerly wait for their parents to fly back from the horizon with food. But these parents could be fishing up to 3000 km away in the vast ocean. So, the chicks, including our Zoi, must, in all probability, wait for many nights and days at the open beach, some days drenching in the pouring rain, swaying with the blasting winds, and other days heating up in the scorching sun. Every bird appearing on the horizon brings hope to these chicks. Zoi continues to gaze into the ocean, braving the rain, wind, and heat. I recently watched a documentary about one of nature's survival stories. I was impressed by the concept, narration and facts, not to mention the incredible videography. This sparked my desire to write about this documentary. After writing it, I decided to share it. These bizarre but true ways of nature will never cease to amaze those who long to know more about the animal kingdom and are fascinated by nature and its uniqueness.
