White A HUG, a textual invitation and a movie Chase The year was 2003, a crisp December. The last Friday of the month was the coldest yet. Clouds choked the sky, and icy winds whipped through the streets. Even a late afternoon glimpse of the sun offered no warmth. Nobody at the office was in a hurry to face the biting cold at home. After a long, tiring day, I was packing up to leave. Then, a text buzzed on my phone. "Jaddu ki jappi chahiye?" it read, from her. Confused, I reread the message. It felt like a riddle, a hint towards something I needed to offer. I replied, "What do you mean?" A quick reply came back: "Haven't seen Munnabhai yet?" Confused again, I responded, "Munnabhai what?" Back then, communication was limited to feature phones and text messages. Facebook and WhatsApp were still dreams of the future. Unable to resist the charming mystery, I settled back in my chair. This woman was captivating, witty, and knew how to draw people in. "Munnabhai MBBS," she explained, referring to Sanjay Dutt's latest movie. "Go watch it. If you can tell me what a 'Jaddu ki jappi' is when you get back, I promise you one." Intrigued by this "Jaddu ki jappi," I could have easily asked someone else. But cheating wouldn't win me the prize. I decided to watch the movie and earn my reward. Despite exhaustion and the late hour, curiosity, that powerful antidote to boredom, fueled my decision to catch the night show. A thirst for knowledge can open doors to a world of understanding. Reaching home, I parked in a hurry, knowing the movie started around 9 pm. A quick meal, a few snacks, and some work later, I was out the door by 8 pm, movie ticket secured. The Answer and the Anticipation Past midnight, I emerged from the theater, finally with the answer. Now, all I craved was to talk to her, to claim my prize. The idea of a hug, a feeling I'd never experienced, filled me with a strange anticipation. Would she keep her promise, or was it just a playful tease? Back then, things were different. Public displays of affection, even with pure intentions, were frowned upon. A hug between a boy and a girl was seen as scandalous. But for this hug, I was willing to break those unwritten rules. The desire to hold her, wherever and whenever we met, was all-consuming. evaded me until dawn. In my dreams, I even embraced her. Waking up late on a weekend, I groggily reached for my phone. There it was, a text message: "How was Munnabhai? Ready for your hug?" "Absolutely! Where can I meet you in the next hour?" I replied eagerly. "Arre, itni bhi kya jaldi hei" came the playful response. "I'm not giving it away so easily. You have to seduce me first." "Seduce you? What's that, and how do I do it?" I was completely lost. "That's up to you, if you're serious about getting a hug from the most charming girl in town," she teased. Later that morning, another text arrived, a digital invitation to her house at 3 pm. Her parents, she explained, would be out of town, leaving the afternoon open for possibilities. By 2:45 pm, I found myself parked outside her house, a nervous energy thrumming through my veins. The promise of a hug, once a playful challenge, now felt like a tangible reward within reach. As the rumble of her departing parents' car faded, I entered the house, the door sighing shut behind me. The air hung heavy with anticipation, thick enough to almost touch. The hug I craved was tantalizingly close, yet she maintained a playful distance, her smile hinting at a test to be passed. Finally, when I brushed past her to enter the dimly lit living room, the scent of jasmine tickled my nose, weaving a sensual spell into the atmosphere. "You look gorgeous!" I blurted out, the words tumbling over each other in my haste. The desire to hold her, to bridge the physical gap that separated us, was a constant battle raging within me. A slow smile played on her lips. "Thank you, I am," she acknowledged, a playful glint in her eyes. "But did it really take you that long to muster a compliment?" We stood there for a moment, caught in a silent dance of unspoken desires. The air crackled with a tension that was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Then, in a sudden movement that sent my heart into a delighted frenzy, she took a step towards me. My hopes soared, anticipation blooming in my chest. But just as I braced myself for the embrace I'd yearned for, she drifted past me and disappeared into the kitchen. Confusion, thick and heavy, settled in my gut. Had I misread the situation entirely? Was the hug a playful fantasy, a fleeting promise never meant to be kept? Just then, a call for help broke the awkward silence. She needed a hand reaching a canister from a high shelf, its location beyond her grasp. Relief washed over me, tinged with a touch of amusement at the unexpected turn of events. I readily volunteered, stepping forward to fulfill this small request. As I stretched for the canister, our bodies collided, and for a fleeting moment, I felt the warmth of hers pressed against mine. The canister clattered to the floor, forgotten in the face of this sudden, unexpected contact. It was a collision that sent a jolt through me, a spark that ignited a fire far deeper than the playful promise of a hug. In that suspended moment, between surprise and a surge of unfamiliar emotion, I understood. Love, it seemed, wasn't confined to the digital world of text messages or a playful bargain. It was the unspoken connection, the electricity that crackled in the air, the spark that ignited in the most unexpected of ways. It was a warmth that bloomed from within, a silent language that transcended words. And in that shared moment, clumsy and unexpected as it was, I had a feeling this was just the beginning of a story waiting to be written. “Yes, a hug a day can surely keep the doctor away”. - Biswajit Tripathy - ©Biswajit Tripathy #story #ShortStory #hugstory #hugs #Hug
